Tybee Island beach (Ga) – AKA Savannah Beach

Child portrait at the beach.

Tybee Island is a great place for casual family photos.
Taking Photographs (family vacation, elopement, engagement or other photos) at the beach can be tremendous fun but there are a few things you should consider like the items that follow. Some of the items only apply if you are planning a water photo session…

Siblings walking along the beach on Tybee Island, Ga.
- weather – it is quite typical to have summer storms/showers on Tybee Island. The late afternoon weather can include: high heat and humidity as well as lengthy or brief showers and thunderstorms. During Hurricane Season the weather can change drastically in short periods of time. The good news is that we currently usually have adequate warning – change your beach plans if your beach destination is being threatened by one of these storms…
- attire - always dress comfortably: swim suits, shorts and short sleeve shirts in the summer; a bit more clothing at other times of the year; make sure limit sun exposure and to use sun screen so we can avoid having ‘red lobsters’ in your photos
- tides - we have two high and low tides each day; high tides may impact beach access for some locations; there are usually a few times each year when we have an extremely high tide which can block/limit access to/from coastal islands like Tybee (see sample chart at bottom of post.)
- rip currents – if you plan a water session then consider the warnings provided by lifeguard stations
- natural events – we occasionally have jelly fish or other sea life that might pose a hazard; again, check with lifeguard stations (we did have some jelly fish at the end of July – life guard stations have a new product that seems to help relieve the stings – I think that it’s called “Jelly Fish Squish?”)
Be safe and Enjoy your time at the beach! – contact me if you need a photographer on Tybee Island (GA) or nearby Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

Tybee Island (Ga, USA) located on the Atlantic Ocean about 15 miles from down town Savannah (Ga, USA); from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) the trip is 45-60 minutes. In addition to the beach and ocean there are several attractions including the Tybee Island fishing pier and the Tybee Island Lighthouse and museum.
If you are visiting the Savannah area then Tybee offers a number of hotels and motels as well as condos for rent. While you are staying on Tybee (sometimes called Tibby or even Savannah Beach) consider having some memorable vacation family beach photographs taken. I meet with families or other groups at beach locations to capture a sense of your visit. I am happy to work with you to create the types of photographs that you are interested in (in addition to bringing my own style into the process.) Please use the Photo Request form for more information.
Note that our summers can be quite warm and humid; the beach usually is a bit cooler than the inland areas of Savannah. Sun screen and lots of drinking water are encouraged as are hats and sun glasses. Enjoy your visit!
